Luxury Surfaces for the High Desert
RDC Renovation & Design Concepts is a flooring, tile, and natural stone company serving Cave Creek and Carefree, Arizona. Both towns sit in the Sonoran Desert north of Phoenix and Scottsdale, and the custom homes RDC works in here are built in desert-contemporary, Territorial, and Santa Fe styles around boulders and mountain views. RDC supplies and installs the flooring, tile, and stone these homes are finished in, and serves them from the Bell Rd showroom in North Phoenix. Projects inside Phoenix are covered on the flooring installation in Phoenix page.
What Makes a Cave Creek Floor Different
Two things shape a surface project here. The first is exposure: rooms placed for the views can take hours of direct sun through large glass, which is the condition that fades and moves the wrong flooring. The second is the land itself. If your home steps down its lot, the floor plan includes stair runs and landings as well as the open rooms.
The architecture follows the desert. Natural, earthy materials suit it in a way a glossy urban finish does not. Travertine, natural stone, and large-format porcelain in stone and wood looks are RDC's usual recommendation here, indoors and out to the covered patios.

Cave Creek and Carefree Are Not the Same Job
The two towns share a desert but ask for slightly different work.
| Area | Homes RDC works in | What RDC installs for it |
|---|---|---|
| Cave Creek | Custom homes and ranches on desert acreage, some on split-level lots | Whole-home stone and wood-look tile, stair runs, primary-bath rebuilds, indoor-outdoor porcelain |
| Carefree | Custom homes on boulder lots, some owned part-year | Travertine and natural stone, spa-level primary baths, large-format porcelain through the main living areas |
The Materials That Suit a Desert Home
- Travertine & natural stone ($12 to $25 per sq ft installed): the material the desert-contemporary and Territorial look is built on, for floors, patios, and primary baths. RDC seals natural stone at installation. Compare options in our natural stone guide.
- Large-format porcelain, 24x48 and larger ($12 to $22 per sq ft installed): fewer grout lines across big open floor plans. In a version rated for exterior use, it runs from the great room out to the covered patio without a material change. Details in our porcelain & ceramic tile guide.
- Wood-look tile & engineered hardwood: the warmth of wood with the durability the sun and the indoor-outdoor life here demand. See our engineered hardwood guide.
- Quartz & slab surfaces: non-porous quartz is easier to keep free of hard-water marks than an unsealed porous stone, templated and installed with seam placement planned in advance.

High-Desert Sun and Your Floor
A room placed for the view can take hours of direct sun a day. Porcelain handles it well because its color is fired into the tile, not printed on a wear layer. Engineered wood is workable, but color choice and window coverings matter more in a room with a wall of west-facing glass than they would elsewhere.
Cave Creek Elevation and What It Means for Your Floors
Cave Creek and Carefree sit roughly 1,000 to 1,300 feet above downtown Phoenix. USGS elevation data puts the ground at about 2,115 feet at Cave Creek Town Hall and about 2,360 feet on Easy Street in Carefree. Phoenix City Hall sits at about 1,087 feet (USGS 3D Elevation Program, checked October 15, 2026). Ground height also changes from lot to lot as the terrain rises and falls.
Elevation alone does not rule out any floor RDC installs. What it changes is how strictly the installation follows the product's own numbers. RDC keeps each manufacturer's acclimation, temperature and perimeter expansion-gap requirements exactly. Long runs get the breaks the product sheet calls for, and the slab is moisture-tested before any wood goes down.
Cave Creek Water Hardness and Your Grout
Town of Cave Creek water is treated Colorado River water delivered through the Central Arizona Project, and the Town's 2024 water quality report notes that many residents operate private wells. If your home is on a well, have the water tested for hardness before the shower is specified. For comparison, City of Phoenix water measures 10 to 17.6 grains of hardness per gallon in its 2025 report.
Standard cement grout is porous, so in a Cave Creek bathroom the grout is a functional choice, not only a color choice. RDC chooses the grout for each area, cement-based, sealed or epoxy, with the water in mind, seals natural stone at installation and recommends resealing it on a schedule. RDC asks whether the property is on a well before the shower is specified.
Indoor to Outdoor Is the Whole Point Here
The desert-contemporary homes RDC works in here are built around the transition to outside: large sliders, covered patios, ramadas, and living space that extends past the wall. Getting that transition right is the difference between a house that flows and one that has a floor and then a different floor.
- Outdoors, use tile rated for exterior use. For covered patios and outdoor kitchens, RDC installs porcelain or stone that its manufacturer rates for exterior use, and natural stone outdoors is sealed. At RDC, patio and pool deck tile runs $20 to $42 per sq ft installed for travertine and $22 to $35 for large-format porcelain pavers; see exterior porcelain for patios and pool decks.
- Match the visual, change the finish. Running a coordinated tile inside and out reads as one continuous space, but the exterior version needs a textured, slip-resistant finish, particularly anywhere near a pool.
- Plan the threshold before the tile is ordered. Check the inside and outside slab heights before the tile is ordered. Deciding how that transition is handled at design stage produces a clean detail; discovering it at install produces a ramp.
- Plan for grit at the doors. On a desert lot, expect sand at the entries, so tile or stone at the doors and a thicker wear layer on any LVP are worth it.
Home Remodeling in Cave Creek and Carefree
For home remodeling in Cave Creek and Carefree, RDC's scope is the surfaces: floors, tile, bathrooms and kitchen surfaces, from one room to the whole house. Some jobs here are a single space: a primary bath stripped to the framing, a stone surround around the fireplace, or a kitchen that gets new countertops, backsplash and floor only. On kitchens, to be clear: RDC does kitchen surfaces, not cabinetry. New countertops, backsplash and floor together run $4,500 to $11,000 or more at RDC, a much smaller job than a full kitchen renovation.

Bathroom Remodeling in Cave Creek
Bathroom remodeling in Cave Creek and Carefree at RDC runs from a new bathroom floor to a primary bathroom taken back to the studs. Sometimes the owner is away for part of the rebuild. RDC installs the bathroom floor, the shower and the wall tile on one contract, with one point of contact and a weekly update with photos.
Two local conditions shape the specification. On a private well, test the water first; RDC chooses the grout for each area (cement-based, sealed or epoxy). Natural stone is sealed at installation and needs resealing on a schedule.
At RDC, a smaller bathroom gutted and rebuilt starts at $9,000, and a primary bathroom starts at $18,000; the final price is set individually after the on-site measure. More on the bathroom remodeling page.
Walk-In Shower in Cave Creek
A walk-in shower in a Cave Creek primary bathroom can be built large: a bench, one or two niches, and frameless glass. It can be tiled in large-format porcelain or stone that matches the desert palette of the house.
What matters most is behind the tile. RDC builds these showers on a bonded waterproofing membrane (Schluter KERDI or RedGard), and no tile goes on until the membrane is complete. Large-format wall tile means fewer grout joints for minerals to collect in, and a frameless panel has no tracks to scale up. Natural stone in a shower is possible, with the understanding that it must be resealed regularly.
A tub-to-shower conversion runs $9,000 to $14,000 at RDC, and a primary bathroom rebuilt around a custom walk-in shower starts at $18,000. A curbless shower is usually about $3,000 more, depending on the existing floor and drain. Layouts are on the custom walk-in shower page.
Tile Installation in Cave Creek
Tile installation in Cave Creek has to deal with the land the houses sit on. On a lot that steps down the terrain, a whole-home tile floor can include stair treads and landings as well as the open rooms. LVP stair runs are priced at $100 to $185 per step at RDC, including carpet removal, installation and the stair nose; tile and stone stairs are priced after measuring.
Large-format porcelain is RDC's usual recommendation for the main living areas because it carries a stone or wood look with few grout lines, and exterior-rated versions continue the floor onto a covered patio. Large tile needs a flat slab: the ANSI A108.02 tolerance is 1/8 inch over 10 feet, so the slab is checked and leveled first, and the tile is set with a leveling system.
Porcelain and ceramic tile runs $7 to $18 per square foot installed at RDC, and large-format porcelain (24x48 and larger) $12 to $22. If old tile comes up first, tile removal takes 1 to 4 days and is done only together with the new floor. More on tile installation in Phoenix.
Engineered Hardwood in Cave Creek
On a concrete slab, the American Hardwood Information Center favors engineered hardwood over solid wood glued down, so engineered is how RDC brings real wood into a Cave Creek home. Its layered core is what keeps it stable in desert dryness when it is installed correctly.
RDC follows the manufacturer's acclimation and perimeter expansion-gap requirements exactly, and the slab is moisture-tested before any wood goes down. Rooms with west-facing glass call for a deliberate color choice and window treatment, since hours of direct sun change wood over time. Engineered hardwood runs $8 to $16 per square foot installed. Species and constructions are on the engineered hardwood page.
